Mobile UX

Overview
Design and development of a vehicle appraisal app
My Contributions
I led my Product and UX team in the research, design and development of a new product category for cap hpi (a B2B and B2C automative data management business)

In the automotive sector, the appraisal and subsequent valuation of a vehicle has long been a very manual process. A paper-based form is normally completed by a trained appraiser, with damage and condition being captured on what is normally referred to as the 'squashed frog' diagram of a vehicle. This can lead to errors or missing data capture and the potential for the valuation of the vehicle to be incorrect.

With my team, I led the discovery, design and delivery of a vehicle appraisal mobile app (iOS and Android) with a number of key objectives:

  • Digitise and simplify the process
  • Reduce errors
  • Capture appraisal evidence with photographs
  • Provide a real-time valuation at the end of appraisal
  • Integrate the appraisal data capture with downstream dealer management systems

Although cap hpi has decades of experience in the valuation and provenance of vehicles, we knew less about the appraisal process. So, we immediately started to collaborate with some our key customers, following a 'jobs to be done' framework. We quickly started to visit a number of dealerships and auction houses to better understand how the process of appraisal varys across different sectors.

As we started to mock-up some concepts and flows, we spent many hours gathering real-world insight and research - sometimes remotely, but more often face-to-face. Designs and experience were developed iteratively - with a focus on large, icon driven spec capture and vehicle damage recording using a 'google maps' style pin-drop experience.

As soon as we launched the product in beta, we started to get large dealership networks contacting us - interested in improving the quality and accuracy of their appraisal process across the UK. We quickly found product-market fit and the sales pipeline started to ramp. The app also won an automotive industry innovation award.

We went on to build more downstream integrations for the dealer appraisal app - allowing the data from each appraisal to be uploaded in real-time into a number of key dealer management systems. This also enabled automatic generation of a tailored valuation for the vehicle based on age, mileage, spec and condition.

After 9 months in market, we were very proud to be able to extend our appraisal product range with a consumer (B2B2C) version, designed to allow drivers to self-appraise and value their vehicle on their own driveway.
